Buying Guide

A little guidance goes a long way to help you choose the rug that is right for you. Whether you need advice on picking the ideal size or color, or want to know how to care for your purchase once it is in your home, you have come to the right place. As always, if there is anything else you need, you can also get in touch using the contact form below.

Size and Placement

Start by measuring your room to determine its area, paying close attention to constraints like door openings, any places where walls jut out, and your ideal furniture arrangement. Most designers recommend leaving two feet of bare floor between the rug and walls to keep a space from feeling overwhelmed, but feel free to bend this rule in smaller spaces or according to your personal preference. We have provided some inspiration below to guide you as you choose the right rug for each room in your home.

In a living room, rugs often serve as the focal point. It is important to consider your placement here so that furniture does not feel crowded, and these are a few simple rules of thumb.

6 x 9

The ideal spot for smaller rugs is centered under your coffee table to anchor the space. If you have occasional chairs, everything will look most balanced if they are at least partially on the rug, too.

Living room with 8x10 rug placement
8 x 10

If you are working with an intermediate size rug, you will achieve the right proportions with your couch and occasional chairs all part-way on so that no pieces of furniture feel left out.

Living room with 9x12 rug placement
9 x 12

A large rug is best to help define the area as a whole. Here, you should place all furniture fully on the rug, with a generous amount of free space to spare.

In the dining room, your aim is to create a sense of balance between the rug and table and ensure there is enough space for your chairs. To achieve this, you will want to allow for at least two feet behind each one when pulled out.

8 x 10

Round tables and rectangular rugs can definitely go together, and for a six-seater you can consider the more compact proportions of an 8 x 10 as a starting point.

Dining room with 9x12 rug placement
9 x 12

With an eight-seater table, you will need to aim for a 9 x 12 rug to make sure your chairs have sufficient room.

Dining room with 10x14 rug placement
10 x 14

Moving up to a ten-seater, consider a 10 x 14 rug to achieve the right spacing. This depends on the size of your table, of course, so when in doubt, follow the two-feet rule and you will be all set.

Choosing the right rug in a bedroom can be daunting because there are plenty of variables when it comes to bed sizes and furniture placement. It is easy to pick the right one with some guidance, however.

Bedroom with 6x9 rug placement
6 x 9

For a single bed, a 6 x 9 is usually sufficient. There is no need to place the rug all the way under the bed in this set-up. Start at around half or three-quarters and allow for some space at the foot for balance.

Bedroom with 8x10 rug placement
8 x 10

For a double or queen-size bed, you will want to move up a rug size. You can follow the same guidelines as above or lay it all the way under the bed and any side-tables. Remember to leave that breathing room at the foot too.

Bedroom with 10x14 rug placement
10 x 14

Moving up to a king-size bed or larger, consider at least a 10 x 14 rug. This also works for a queen if you want to allow for even more space on either side to create a luxurious look.

Unpacking Guide

1. Clear furniture from your space so you can unpack and position your rug easily.
2. Move your folded rug to the center of the space and open it, repositioning it as desired.
3. Reposition the rug as needed.
4. Creases are normal and will disappear within a few days. Rolling the rug into a cylinder for 1-2 days will speed up crease removal.

Rug pads are highly recommended. They not only minimize wear and extend the life of your rug, but they make the rug feel softer underfoot. Particularly beneficial when used with rugs on hard floors, they create a luxurious experience when used beneath rugs on carpeted surfaces.

Why use a rug pad?

  • Rug pads keep your rug in place
  • Rug pads extend the life of your rug. They provide a physical buffer between your rug and the floor, preventing wear
  • Rug pads add cushion and insulation, making a rug feel softer and cozier underfoot

Rug Care

With proper care, a quality Jaipur Living design will be a part of your home for many years. Here are some basic guidelines to follow to keep your rug looking beautiful.

—Loose fibers, known as sprouts, are common in handmade rugs and may be trimmed with scissors.
—As with all fine fibers, fading may occur over time, especially if your rug is placed in direct sunlight.

—Rotate your rug every six months to prevent uneven fading and wear.
—Moisture can damage fine rugs. Blot—don't rub—when spills occur.
—Vacuum regularly to remove surface dirt.
—When needed, have your rug professionally cleaned by experts skilled in the care of handmade rugs.

—Before vacuums, brooms were used to sweep fine rugs (and they still work well, especially on a rug's edges or fringe).

—Canister vacuums are ideal for the care of handcrafted rugs as their hand-held cleaning attachments use suction to clean without the help of a beater bar, or rotating brush, which may loosen the fibers of fine rugs.

—Should your vacuum have a bare floor setting, use that setting to raise the rotating brush as you care for your handmade rug, avoiding the rug's edges and fringe when possible.

The following is a general recommendation. Be sure to check any specific requirements for your rug before cleaning:
—Blot, don't rub, when spills occur and clean with a small amount of mild soap followed by a solution made from equal parts white vinegar and cold or lukewarm water.

—Do not use hot water or oxygen cleaners on your rug. Remove any remaining moisture with dry towels.
—For best results, we recommend periodic professional cleaning by an expert skilled in the care of handmade rugs.

Design Support

There is a rug for almost every room in any home... but how do you choose? Picking a design is more of an art than a science, but here are some answers to common questions we get asked to help guide your decision.

Yes. The best way to be sure that you love the pattern and color is to order a swatch. Our generously-sized, 18"x18" swatches may be purchased by adding them to your cart in the same way you would order one of our rugs. Click on "Swatch" from any of our rug pages to add a swatch to your cart.

We do our best to make sure rug colors are represented accurately. However, there may be subtle variations in color due to the uniqueness of the natural fibers we use, or, if dyes are used, variations in dye lots.

Additionally, though we take care to ensure our photos match the actual color of our rugs as seen in natural daylight, lighting conditions in your home may differ. This is particularly the case with fibers that possess a natural sheen, which may look different in brighter lighting conditions.

For rugs with a higher pile, colors may appear more or less intense in different lighting conditions. Some general advice is that if you view a rug with the pile angled towards you, the rug will appear lighter. If you view a rug with the pile angled away from you, the colors will appear more saturated.

Finally, color variations may be the result of your screen's color, contrast, and brightness. We highly recommend you purchase a physical rug sample before making your final decision should you have any concern about matching your rug to other items in your room.

Think about the impression you would like to create with the rug. Rugs shape a room's personality. They can complement or harmonize with an existing style (for example, a modern rug in a modern room) or can create statement-making contrast (for example, a traditional rug in a modern room).

A neutral rug can draw other elements of a room together while a strong design can add interest to a neutral space. Remember that texture can create as much of a statement as pattern.

The larger the space, the larger the rug should be. You may also want to consider layering rugs to add visual impact to larger spaces.

When trying to choose between a plush rug or one with a lower pile, consider how your room is used. On each rug page, you will find a section called "Special Features" that will tell you the type of traffic each Jaipur Living rug is designed to handle. High-traffic rooms call for high-traffic rugs. The plushest rugs are best in rooms with lighter traffic.
